Condoms

As well as stopping you from getting pregnant, condoms are the only type of contraception that can protect you against STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). One in nine people has had an STI so the chances of catching something are higher than you might think.

Condoms are made of latex or polyurethane (thin rubber materials) and fit over a boy’s penis when it is erect. Before you have sex, the boy puts one over his penis and this stops his sperm from going inside the girl’s vagina.

If you follow the instructions and use a new one every time you have sex, condoms can be 98% effective at reducing pregnancies. Condoms can also help protect both patners from STIs, including HIV. You cannot rely on your condom unless it carries the compulsory CE mark. The BSI kitemark gives you extra reassurance that the condom has been tested beyond the legal requirements. Always check the use by date on the condom. Do not use them if they are out of date.
